Image Permissions

Be sure you have permission to use all photos or images that you upload on your website.

Copyright

Many images are protected by copyright.  Often the copyright owners are willing to grant permission if you ask.  Some images are covered under fair use, creative commons, or public domain policies.

If you are not sure, do not use the image. Some of our departments have had to pay fines when they used an image without the owner's permission. It's not very pleasant, but there are lawyers who specialize in sending out letters on behalf of clients who are digital photographers and artists.

See Sources for Images to learn where to obtain free or low-cost images for use on your website.

Photos of Individuals

You should obtain consent from individuals before using their likenesses on your website or in other print materials. Even if the person agrees to let you use their image, it is safest to obtain a signed release form in case of disputes.
